Convict Lake bellowing

Fred took me on a great hike just off the 395, on our way home from Mammoth, around Convict Lake.
We had the lake almost too ourselves.

I was drawn to the lake.  First the edges were raised, something I just cannot figure out.  Plus, the lake was talking to us.  It bellowed as the water underneath the frozen outer layer moved under the ice, and the ice amplified the noise.  It sounded haunted.  It was so cool.

  1. On the road to/from Tahoe, I always see the signs for this lake yet never take the time to detour. Did you know that the lake was named after an incident on September 23, 1871, where a group of convicts escaped from prison in Carson City? It is not the most inviting name but your photos take away all the evilness of "Convict".

Another cool tidbit that my boys would love, The lake was the filming location for several scenes in the 1998 film Star Trek: Insurrection.

I love the photo of the frozen lake rising and your description of it "speaking to you". Yikes. I'd be a little ooked out. Great, great photos. Thanks for making me want to detour next time.
