It is about 380 miles from Oceanside to Prescott, AZ, an easy single day drive, without a baby and without a trailer. But since we have those wonderful things, we had to figure out where to stay in between. For over a hundred miles there is pretty much nothing after Palm Springs.
It is just the desert. Beautiful, flat and hot.
We decided to stay in Indio, which is just twenty minutes past Palm Springs, since there is a campground that we like there and an amazing deli (that is honestly worth a day trip to Indio just for a sandwich).
In preparation for our summer travels we purchased a bike rack which can be easily transferred from the Subaru to the Scamp and vice versa. We bought a 1Up bike rack (USA made!) which is great for us since there is an option to add on just one bike (when A1 is older). Most bike racks have a two bike add on, making a total of four which is really long, and one bike too many for us. Also, this bike rack tilts up instead of straight out, which adds to our ground clearance when driving over dips and such.
There is a lot of talk in the Scamp community about bikes on the back of 13' Scamps, whether or not the baby trailer can handle the extra weight. The Scamp is so light that the extra weight makes the Scamp more susceptible to sway, which can be dangerous if it gets out of control.
Eric did a lot of research and found that a sway control may do the trick. A sway control is a friction bar that restricts the unwanted motion. Eric had to drill into the frame of the Scamp to attach it but it looks good and it works well!
We are so thankful we had the optional Fiamma awning installed when we purchased our Scamp. It makes a huge difference with temperature, making hanging out outside, even in 100 degree heat, doable.
TKB Deli has consistently been named one of the top one hundred places to eat in the US according to Yelp.
My veggie sandwich with pesto on jalapeno cheese focaccia bread is without a doubt one of the best (if not the best) vegetarian sandwiches I have ever had.
Eric had a spicy chicken sandwich on the same amazing bread, which he was very happy with.
Another addition to our summer fun are Yeti colsters. They work so good! There is nothing better than a cold bevie on a hot summer day. (Both cans and bottles fit.)
Did I mention that the campground we like, Indian Waters RV Resort, has not just one but two pools? For $30 a night you can't beat it. This joy is priceless.
JOY indeed. That a fabulous blog post of Day #1 of your adventure. It sounds as if you have the perfect RV for your little family's needs. Woo hoo! That gif at the end says it all.
ReplyDeleteAND thanks. I just ate lunch and I'm hungry because of you. Those sandwiches look amazing. Keep having a blast.
Love to you all!
